The fun nature of female friendships is finally showing its power in the comedy space with the upcoming film, ‘My Divorce Party.’ That important message will be showcased when Gravitas Ventures distributes the movie on digital and cable VOD this Tuesday, April 30.
In honor of ‘My Divorce Party’s release, Film Factual is premiering an exclusive clip from the project. In the clip, divorcee Xan gathers her close female friends to celebrate her impending split during a cathartic, but equally humorous, ceremony in Joshua Tree.
The comedy marks the feature film writing and directorial debuts of Heidi Weitzer. The movie stars Rumer Willis (‘Empire’), Kimia Behpoornia (‘Abbott Elementary’), Michelle Meredith (‘The Morning Show’), Sarah Hollis (’24’), Desiree Staples (‘Take Me to Tarzana’) and Laith Ashley (‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’).
Set during the weekend before finalizing her divorce, ‘My Divorce Party’ follows Xan (Staples) as she decides to gather her closest friends in Joshua Tree to relax, celebrate and more appropriately, sulk. The gang arrives at their less than tranquil lodging, an RV park in Joshua Tree. Upon their arrive, the women meet their eccentric neighbors Ezekiel (Cap Peterson), a pansexual hick, and Amara (Dionne Gipson), an Instagram bohemian hippie.
That evening, Xan drunkenly spirals out and reveals that she’ll have to give up half of all of her assets to her soon-to-be ex in the divorce settlement come Monday, so she drained her bank account and brought $100,000 in cash to the desert. She starts throwing the money into the bonfire before her friends spring into action and stop her.
Lines are soon drawn as every friend has a different opinion on what Xan should do with the money. Samantha (Hollis), always practical, wants her to invest in a conservative long-term mutual fund. Ren (Willis), three years in recovery, wants her to selflessly donate all of the money to different women’s shelters and nature preserves. Isabella (Behpoornia), who is trying to hide her own recent engagement, thinks Xan should use it for her own self-care. Wendy (Meredith), meanwhile, wants her to use it all on strippers and drugs.
Xan decides to split the cash evenly between each of her friends, with only one caveat: they must spend it all this weekend. They each get to live out their ideal way of helping their friend through this heartbreak. As they spend their way through Joshua Tree the group learns that maybe Xan isn’t telling the whole story.
As Xan and her friends’ tensions come to a head, Ezekiel and Amara plot to steal the rest of Xan’s savings. Although they are able to band together and stop the couple’s scam, the damage Xan has done to her friends is irreversible. Xan’s only goal now is to get the few friendships that matter back on track before the weekend is up.
